One thing that is very much prevalent in India is that we forget our very own sciences, traditions which dates back to thousand years. Like ayurvedic treatment called Panchkarma. India had switched to gyms & had forgotton about yoga until the west started appreciating it.
Yoga became popular once again thanks to the west who started practicing it and coming to India to learn it. Soon, we Indians started practicing it by looking at it's popularity in United states & some European countries like England. It was only after yoga gained popularity in the west that we were reminded of it's exceptional benefits on health.
It was not as if we had totally forgotten it but we had sidelined it but now it has gained immense popularity specially among common people.
Thanks to Swami Ramdev that he made yoga a household name. He brought yoga to common man's home. He should be credited for making yoga a household name in 21st century India.
Similarly, Panchkarma has been sidelined by common Indians when it comes to treatments. We prefer allopathic ointment massage rather than an ayurvedic oil massage which was India's age old tradition of healing pain. The government needs to promote panchkarma too as it has promoted international yoga day. India is becoming a home of diseases. We are not as healthy as our grandparents were. Panchkarma can bring a change in a common man's life.
The awareness about Panchkarma and it's positive effects on the body should be made popular. we need to make it a household name like anulom-vilom or kapalbhati pranayam. People need to create more awareness about it's positive results on body and government also need to play it's role in it. The Panchkarma has very effective effects on an rheumatoid arthritis patient but you need to have patience and need to be calm, and follow the advice properly, only then the benefits will show.
I am a rheumatoid arthritis patient since 2000. I was affected by rheumatoid arthritis when I was very young. After ten years of great pain, inflammation, and deformities ( even after continuous treatment) I went for panchkarma session and it brought a change.

What is Panchkarma?
Panchkarma is an ayurvedic treatment to drain out toxins from body. It rejuvenates and is a self healing process. Panchkarma uses oil massages, steam, enema, strict diet for draining out toxins from the body. It brings tremendous amount of relief to an arthritis patient if followed properly. Migraine patients are given 'shirodhara' it helps in easing migraine. There are different methods and oil for different diseases in panchkarma.
I went to Patanjali for Panchkarma and stayed there for one month. The treatment given to me was as follows :
First the ayurvedic doctor analyses your disease & it's severity. The Panchkarma treatment is given on this basis. It may vary from person to person.
The panchkarma treatment given to me included:
Enema or basti :
1. Two kinds of enema is given on alternate days. The enema in ayurvedic language is called 'basti'. One is oil enema and another one is liquid enema warm ayurvedic herbs water.
I was given porridge in the breakfast the day oil enema was given and has to fast in the morning the day liquid enema was given.
All the waste deposited is thrown out. It was given to me for one month. You actually feel relieved.
2. The Poti saek or sikai :
saek or sikai with potli containing ayurvedic herbs etc. Hot potli containing ayurvedic herbs is put not only on joints but all over the body. When I was given this potli therapy, I used to sweat a little after some time. It helps greatly in easing pain and inflammation of the joints.
3. Oil massage or abhyanga:
Oil massage or abhyanga as it is called in ayurveda. Oil made of medicinal ayurvedic herbs is massaged all over the body. It lubricates joints. The warmth of the hands brings out small amount of sweat from body which drains out toxins. Thus it soothes the joints and body. It enhances blood circulation.
4. Steam or Swedan :

Steam or swedan as it is called in ayurveda is essential part of Panchkarma. It drains out all toxins through sweating. The person is made to sit inside a box with face outside and steam is released for 10-15 minutes. The sweating from sweat
5. Food & water :
Only simple food is allowed during panchkarma which includes daal, cooked vegetables & chapati in the lunch followed by khichdi in the dinner. Milk with haldi is given at night before sleeping. The morning begins with warm honey water. During panchkarma you are allowed to drink only hot water. Only warm water is used for bathing and washing hands. So, ayurvedic doctor allows warm water for drinking & for daily activities.
Nothing helped me as much as panchkarma helped me. You should go for panchkarma if you are an arthritis patient. It helps. You may not get rid of rheumatoid arthritis as it is an autoimmune disease. But certainly you will feel relief from pain & inflammation. Always remember that you need to continue the medicines you a taking.
Fasting :
Fasting also helps. Fasting does not mean no food and it does not mean eating any fried potatoes (as people do during navratri) etc. Fasting in ayurveda as told to me by my ayurvedic doctor means drinking lots of water and fruits or boiled vegetables. I was told to fast once a week.
Naturopathy :
Naturopathy is also important in relieving pain & inflammation. It should also be promoted along with panchkarma.
Naturopathy involves natural ways to relieve the pain.
During my naturopathy I was given following treatment:
1. Potli saek or sikai as it is called in hindi.
2. A hot water bath : patient is immersed in hot water containing salts with neck and face outside the tub. Patient is made to drink a glass of water before immersion.
3. Steam : It drains out toxins and impurities.
4. Physiotherapy : I was also given Physiotherapy. It makes movement of the joint easy.
5. Diet : Diet is very important in naturopathy. Soaked almonds, figs, munnaka (dried grapes) along with papaya was given in the breakfast. Grapes and boiled vegetables were given in lunch followed by warm fenugreek water with honey after an hour of lunch. Juice in the evening, khichdi was given at night.
Panchkarma and naturopathy needs to be promoted. Panchkarma cleanses the cells. The way diseases are growing, panchkarma can atleast help keep the toxins out of the body. One can go for panchkarma once in a year or two. Mass awareness should be generated by the government and common people too.
