Obnoxious behavior-Gen Bipin Rawat's untimely death

Obnoxious behavior on CDS Gen. Bipin Rawat's death!

Death is a somber moment. Even if our worst enemy die, we should somberly convey our condolences. This has been our culture since time immemorial. India has a tradition of treating even the captured enemy soldiers during the war, with utmost  respect. We do not indulge in merry making at someone's death. We are emotional traditional people with human values.

These values are imbibed in us since our childhood by our grandparents to parents to uncles and aunts. It helps us to understand how to differentiate between what's wrong and what's right. During ancient times or should I say even before, during Mahabharata or Ramayana times, the king has always respected the 'senapati' & the 'rajdoot' of the enemy country. Our cultural values and military ethics teach us to treat them with respect.

We respect even enemy soldiers during war:

I was surprised to see how some people on social media reacted to India's first Chief of defence staff, Gen Bipin Rawat's untimely death. We are the same people who paid respect to the Pakistani soldiers during the Kargil war, when our Army had buried the bodies of dead Pakistani soldiers with full military honours, when Pakistan refused to take back the bodies of  their dead soldiers.

A soldier par excellence:

It was disheartening to see, how few people reacted to his death with smiley, 'karma' comment and a few using even derogatory language. This was uncalled for. He was the chief of defense staff (CDS), a highly decorated soldier well educated, had exemplary courage and exceptional career, a soldier par excellence! Yes, he was a military hero whose military career was par excellence.  He achieved this through hard work and nothing was given to him either by the Army or the government as a gift. Moreover in the Army, you earn everything - 'kuchh bhi plate mein sajake Indian Army nahi deti hai', everything has to be earned from uniform to ranks to badges to medals. He was a highly decorated officer and he earned those medals on his chest through hard work.

We enjoy freedom because a soldier keeps our flag flying and democracy alive, preventing the enemy from entering our territory !

Even the neighbouring countries had sent condolences including Pakistan. U.S. too reacted by sending condolences but some of our very own people disrespected a soldier in death. People can have differences of opinions, or may not like certain person but being insensitive to the soldier who was serving the highest military office is uncalled for. Remember, all the freedom of speech that we enjoy, we enjoy because there's a soldier somewhere at a lonely post on a high mountain top with his chest facing the enemy gun. Tremendous amount of courage is required to face the enemy bullets on the chest,  not all have that courage. How many of us will willingly take an enemy bullet?

It takes guts and grit to be a soldier:

It takes guts to go inside enemy territory for a surgical strike or for an airstrike. It takes guts to hunt down enemy from highest of the high mountains to the deepest of the deep jungles, to stay away from the family for months, to leave all the comforts and pleasures of the life and live inside a tent or on a high mountain post with no comforts around like Siachin Glacier or Galwan valley, with only gun in hands where one mistake could cost life of a soldier or his buddies. This courage is beyond anything, not all have it. Those who have it, they wear uniform to serve the nation. Anyone who reaches from a lieutenant to the office of CDS should have faced bullets many a times in his military career, bullets passing by his ears or over his head just missing hitting him by fraction of a second. He would have abandoned comforts of life many a times on many postings. People can't leave internet for a day, can't live without AC, fans, cars, mobiles for a day and here a soldier lives without families for months sometimes, forget the internet connection! They miss out some of the best memorable moments of their lives from kids first birthday to holding kids in arms to anniversaries to festivals to mom- dad's love affection.

Respect the sacrifice of a soldier, the least we can do:

The obnoxious behavior by few on  Gen Rawat's untimely death was  uncalled for humans. He did not ask for the office of COAS or CDS. The government chose him as COAS and later on as CDS on the basis of his capabilities to lead the both.

The chopper crash of CDS was such a tragic incidence and all 14 people died in the crash that too by burning. Their loved ones could not even see their faces as they were severely burnt and DNA tests were conducted for recognition. How sad it was! Some of the soldiers killed in crash have small kids, a whole future is ahead of them.

The courage of these families for sending their sons to the armed forces should be respected. It's not easy to sacrifice a son, a brother, a husband, a father for the nation.

Respect should always be given to a soldier because he's there on a shivering cold winter on an icy mountain top, on a lonely post, leaving a family behind, standing tall for the nation, protecting our democracy and the freedom of speech that people were enjoying on social media after Gen Rawat's death.
